This classical Greek statue depicts the God Apollo and his love Daphne spurning his affections and transforming into a tree.
Apollo, the God of the Sun and the arts, made the mistake of mocking the god of love, Eros, for use of his bow and arrow saying he should leave them for hands more worthy of them. Insulted, Eros takes 2 arrows - one of gold and one of lead. The gold one he shot into Apollo making him instantly fall in love with the beautiful mortal maiden, Daphne. He shoots the lead shaft at Daphne inciting hatred into her heart.
Apollo endlessly pursues his love for Daphne who rejects and despises him. Seeing that Apollo was bound to catch her, she called upon her father, "Help me, Peneus! Open the earth to enclose me, or change my form, which has brought me into this danger! Let me be free of this man from this moment forward!"
Peneus answered her plea and her skin turned into bark, her hair became leaves, her arms transformed into branches as her feet became rooted into the ground turning into a Bay Laurel tree which Apollo took as one of his sacred symbols and to this day, the leaves have never known decay.
Based on the statue by Gian Lorenzo Bernini (right), this beautifully detailed cold cast resin museum replica statue depicts the Greek God Apollo pursuing Daphne, the object of his affects that spurns him. Apollo clutches Daphne’s hip pursuing her as she flees trying to escape him. Apollo desperate and longing wears a laurel crown foreshadowing Daphne’s metamorphosis into the laurel tree. Daphne is portrayed halfway through her etamorphosis into the laurel tree with her arms already transforming into its branches as she flees and calls to her Father to save her from Apollo.
Made of cold cast resin, this Greek Myth statue has exceptional detail and a white stone like finish. It measures 14 inches high.
